Beyond Physiological Muscular & Structural Benefits of Yoga

Estimated reading time 1 minute
Yoga is so much more than the physical āsana practice that most people recognise as yoga, and of course the physical aspect of yoga is great and has many benefits, but I don’t want yoga to just be reduce to that.
The physical aspect of yoga is only 1/8th of what yoga really is, and even if the entry point for most people may be the physical aspect, it really is just a small part of it, the spiritual, mental and psychological aspect of yoga can not be ignored.
Yoga teaches us to quieten our minds, so we could say that fundamentally yoga is about the mind, and stabilising the nervous system. In today’s modern age of go go go, our nervous system is constantly being triggered, destabilising us; which shows up as physical and mental suffering. Yoga helps us find that deep inner peace even when things are not perfect.
With a regular yoga practice, we can learn to manage our own nervous system, our anxiety, our traumas and our triggers and we can reprogram our nervous system. This takes time and effort but it is so worth it.
