What is Yoga?
Yoga is so much more than just an exercise class, the word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” meaning unite, it is a union of body mind and breath, and it’s a complete way of life.
On the physical level, it’s harmonising the body, mind and emotions, and at the spiritual level it’s a union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness thus creating an introspective yoga experience.

Benefits of Yoga
All elements of yoga help you obtain a sense of well-being and space in the body and the mind.
The postures (Āsanas) help with flexibility, stamina and building physical strength and balance, while toning the body, improving joint health and massaging the internal organs. A proper practice of āsanas requires the mind to be fully focused and be present therefore promoting mindfulness.
The breathing (Prānayāma) improves all the body systems by bringing oxygenated blood to the muscles and organs, energising the body whilst releasing tension and keeping us in a vibrant healthy state of body and mind.
Linking physical movement with conscious breathing, yoga raises our postural awareness and fills the body with breath and energy. This helps the body cope with mental and physical challenges that the modern-day living and technology places on us.
“It’s the power of prāṇa that can free the mind from blocks and thereby lead us to greater clarity”
–TKV Desikachar
Meditation and Relaxation (Dhyānam) helps to withdraw the senses and allows us to go within and quieten the mind, bringing inner peace. By reducing stress in the mind and the body, yoga enhances the immune system and overall physical and mental health and allows us to completely relax, allowing the body to heal and rejuvenate. Yoga helps us to connect with our inner wisdom and who we really are.
Patañjali YSyogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ –
yoga is the containment of the activities of the mind
- I teach a very traditional yoga, which has its roots in the ancient texts, of which Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is devoted exclusively to yoga. I follow the lineage of Śrī Krishnamacarya and his son TKV Desikachar. Śrī Krishnamacarya (1888-1989) is also known as ‘the father of modern yoga’. He also taught Pattabhi Jois of Ashtanga Yoga and BKS Iyengar of Iyengar Yoga.
Yoga Philosophy
The wisdom and philosophies from the ancient text of Patanjali’s yoga sutra and Bhagavad Gita are woven into the sessions which allows for great personal development and growth. All aspects of yoga including the life affirming philosophy is something that you can take off the mat and apply to your everyday life.
TKV Desikachar“The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform asānas, but in how it positively changes the way we live out lives and our relationships”
Yoga for Everyone
Yoga is non-competitive and very inclusive. Yoga is so much more than a series of Āsana’s. Developing the breath is a big part of yoga, as is mindfulness and meditation. People often say to me ‘Yoga is not for me because I’m not flexible enough’. I’m absolutely passionate about changing that belief, anyone can do yoga and benefit from it no matter their age, gender, flexibility, strength or background.
Professor T Krishnamacharya”If you can breathe you can do yoga”
Regular yoga practice helps athletes and sports enthusiasts by reducing the stiffness in their soft tissues and joints, adjusting any postural imbalances and getting more mobility, which helps improve their performance and avoid injury.

Yoga Therapy
The first thing to know about yoga therapy is that it’s nothing like a yoga class or a private yoga sessions. It’s probably more akin to physical or emotional therapy. Yoga Therapy has been practiced for thousands of years in the East and its benefits are only just starting to be recognised in the West.

Private Lessons
Sometimes Yoga in a group session is just not right
A private yoga session is geared towards your overall well-being, personal fitness level/experience and long-term goals. It’s always advisable to have a few private sessions if you are a beginner to learn the basics.
Recommended for:
- Beginners – wishing to set a strong foundation for their practice
- Intermediate students – wishing to enhance their practice. Even if you attend regular group classes, its a good idea to do occasional private sessions to make sure that you are building a strong practice.
- Athletes – to improve their performance and injury prevention.
- Any other special requirements or goals

Whether you have been doing yoga for a while, or you are a complete beginner the sessions will be tailored for your individual needs, pace and focus to develop a broader experience of the power of yoga, and deepen your practice and understanding of yoga. Yoga must fit in with the individual rather than the individual fitting in with yoga.

Educational & Special Needs
I also teach yoga to young adults at a special needs school and there has been a noticeable and positive difference in their behaviour. I also work 1-2-1 with a young client who has severe mental health issues and yoga has helped him tremendously with breathing and calming the nervous system and overall quality of life.
